The Mental Health Program Area was established in 1998 and mental health continues to be an important area for both GPs and the wider community.
GPds is funded by the Commonwealth's Department of Health and Ageing to manage and deliver a range of mental health programs.
These include:
- Rural Primary Health Services (RPHS)
- Access to Allied Psychological Services (ATAPS) provided under the Better Outcomes in Mental Health Care (BOiMHC). General Counselling, Perinatal and Children and Youth Services.
- Mental Health Services in Rural and Remote Areas Program
In the Mental Health Programs we:
Deliver counselling and mental health services by way of contracted Allied Mental Health Professionals
- Provide education
- Work with local Mental Health Services to develop strategies and processes to support GPs and the health services to work collaboratively to provide integrated care for patients experiencing mental illness
- Provide a Health Services Directory of mental health providers
- Disseminate useful mental health resources
GP down south has free counselling and mental health services available in the Wellington, Warren Blackwood, Peel and Vasse Leeuwin regions for health care card holder patients of all ages who require general counselling for mild to moderate mental health issues.

Mental Health Referal Pathways
There are referral forms, mental health care plans and lists of mental health professionals registered with the program in the different areas, please be aware to select the appropriate form, plan or list for your area.
